2025 was a big year for Indigo Power. We worked through challenges in electricity retail, made steady progress on community batteries, strengthened key partnerships, and built real momentum towards our purpose, delivering community-owned, locally resilient energy systems across Victoria and New South Wales.
Over 2025, we grew Indigo Power’s community battery fleet from one to five, secured funding for a further five, and won contracts to deliver another 11.
Across the year, ideas became infrastructure, plans became funding, and community support translated into action. The work is challenging, but the direction is clear, and the pace is picking up.
Here’s our year in review.
The year kicked off with visible progress on the ground with the Yarra Junction community battery successfully commissioned in January 2025. We also asked shareholders to support the next phase of community battery growth, and the response was terrific. We secured $750,000 from 11 shareholders, which helped back an $800,000 loan from BankWAW to deliver seven community batteries.
February highlighted the breadth of our work, with Indigo Power awarded an $816,000 contract by Towong Shire Council to deliver the Resilient Buildings project, rolling out solar, battery, communications equipment and water tanks across the Shire. We also installed a 100 kW Indigo Power–owned EV fast charger in Tumbarumba, growing our asset base while supporting the shift to cleaner regional transport.
Momentum continued in March with the Yarra Junction battery launch event, bringing together shareholders, customers, and partners to celebrate the project. We also rolled out the Energy Shapers Plan, including a new daytime import credit designed to incentivise daytime electricity consumption, and a time of use feed in tariff to support strategic solar exports and grid stability. We were also notified that the retail partner who supported our retail delivery would no longer be offering us that service from October 1.
April saw the launch of our equity crowdfunding campaign, which closed in May after raising almost $420,000 from supporters. That month also included signing a lease with North East Water for the Baranduda community battery (120 kW / 448 kWh), and commissioning the YACK02 battery (60 kW / 200 kWh) at Yackandandah Sports Park.
June marked a major financing milestone, with formal approval of the $800,000 BankWAW loan and achievement of the required ARENA grant funding co-contribution target. This cleared the way for the ARENA community battery program to move fully into implementation. We also welcomed our first work experience student, Keira, who supported early preparation work for our home battery program: a small but meaningful investment in future energy skills.
In July, our focus shifted to rebuilding the foundations of Indigo Power’s retail service. We reviewed the market and selected Next Business Energy (NBE) as our preferred retail partner. We also hosted a pricing webinar to explain updates to our pricing and the introduction of the Energy Shapers plan and the time-of-use feed-in tariff.
August saw the Baranduda battery installed and agreements put in place for our community battery at the Cricket Albury Wodonga (CAW) indoor stadium. We also took over operation of the YACK02 community battery, which is owned by the Indigo Shire Council.
In September we called for customer registrations to receive our new electricity retail offer with NBE, whilst progressing the build out of our new retail service. On the community battery side, civil works at CAW were completed and Baranduda commissioning was scheduled.
In October, we continued building towards a relaunch of our retail offer. We also moved closer delivery of ARENA Tranche One, ordering batteries for Old Beechworth Gaol and Myrtleford McNamara Reserve. By late October, retail development was progressing towards a 1 December relaunch, and the CAW battery was installed on site.
November was about getting ready to switch the Indigo Power Retail lights back on, with a relaunch targeted for early December for testing with the first few customers. On the ground, the CAW community battery was commissioned and operational, and civil works were completed for both Old Beechworth Gaol and Myrtleford McNamara community batteries, setting up the first ARENA community battery installs.
December brought the relaunch of Indigo Power Retail and the gradual opening of the offer to increasing number of customers as testing was completed. We can now provide our service to our customers again! In community batteries, Myrtleford McNamara was installed with commissioning currently underway, and the Old Beechworth Gaol now has a brand new distribution board, with the community battery to arrive in the new year.
