Energy Shapers update: better daytime pricing and year-round business rebates

In depth  

Energy Shapers is built around a simple idea: make electricity cheaper when renewable energy is plentiful, and give customers a reason to shift flexible electricity use into those periods. 

We’ve made some important updates to the plan from 1 August 2026. 

For businesses, the biggest change is that the Energy Shapers daytime rebate is now available year-round. Previously, the business rebate was only available between 1 October and 31 March. You can now build business practices around a reliable energy rebate, and benefit year-round. 

For Victorian households and businesses, another important improvement is coming. The Energy Shapers window has retained a five-hour window but moved from 10am–3pm to 11am–4pm. For residential customers, this means that the rebate window lines up with new lower-cost solar soak network tariffs introduced by Victorian electricity distributors. This means the Energy Shapers rebate is now applied on top of an already lower network rate during those hours, making the overall daytime price lower.

All residential Energy Shapers rebates are available year-round and are uncapped. 

Business rebates are also now available year-round and apply to the first 50 kWh used during the rebate window each day. Normal pricing applies after the first 50 kWh. Customers must have a smart meter to sign up for the Energy Shapers plan. 

A better fit for businesses that use power during the day 

Our business electricity prices are worth another look this year, particularly if your business naturally uses a lot of electricity during the daytime. 

Previously, the seasonal nature of the business Energy Shapers rebate limited how useful the plan could be. Extending it across the full year means businesses can now benefit from their daytime consumption through winter as well as summer. 

You don’t need sophisticated energy technology to make use of the plan. A business that is already operating equipment, heating or cooling its premises, pumping water or otherwise consuming electricity during the rebate period should naturally benefit. 

There is also more opportunity for businesses that can deliberately move flexible loads. Electric vehicle charging, batteries, hot water, heating and cooling, pumps and other equipment can all be scheduled into the rebate window. 

For business customers, we have capped the rebate at 50 kWh each day. We set this at a practical level: roughly the amount of energy a typical single-phase site could use if it was running close to full capacity across the rebate period. For most small businesses, that provides plenty of room to make use of the daytime rebate. 

A significant change for Victorian households 

There is a slightly different story for residential customers in Victoria. 

Until this year, Energy Shapers provided its rebate between 10am and 3pm, but the underlying network tariff did not necessarily provide a particularly low rate during the same period. That has now changed. 

Victorian electricity networks have introduced a dedicated solar soak period from 11am to 4pm, with lower network charges designed to encourage electricity use when rooftop and large-scale solar generation is high. So, we have moved the Energy Shapers rebate to the same period. 

That means an Energy Shapers customer can now receive both the benefit of the lower underlying network tariff and the Indigo Power rebate at the same time. For eligible Victorian residential customers, that makes the five-hour daytime window substantially more attractive for shifting flexible electricity use. 

Explaining the Energy Shapers plan 

The electricity system has changed significantly as more solar has been installed over the past decade. During the middle of sunny days, there can be an enormous amount of renewable electricity available. Wholesale electricity prices can become very low and sometimes negative. Later in the day, as solar generation drops and demand rises, electricity can become much more expensive. 

At the same time, Indigo Power’s customers have been installing ever larger solar PV systems. This means on sunny days, we’ve got plenty of exported solar energy to share. Energy Shapers is designed to reflect that changing system. Instead of treating every kilowatt hour as though it has the same value at every time of day, the plan gives customers a clear incentive to move flexible consumption into periods when energy is plentiful. 

That might mean charging an EV or home battery during the day, heating water, running a pool pump, pre-heating or cooling a building, or simply scheduling other electricity use into the rebate period where practical. 

We previously worked through a real household example showing how a battery, EV charging and other loads can respond to Energy Shapers pricing. The tariff settings have changed since that analysis, but the underlying principle is the same. 

Is Energy Shapers right for you? 

Energy Shapers won’t be the best plan for every household or business. Its value depends on when you use electricity, your network tariff, your meter and how much electricity you can shift into the daytime rebate period.
