We caught up with Rowly Milhinch, the driving force behind Scion Wine, to learn more about his business, his commitment to renewable energy, and why he chose Indigo Power.

Scion Wine isn’t just about making great wine—it’s about reimagining tradition through a modern lens. “For 21 years, we’ve been crafting Rutherglen’s most traditional grape varieties into exciting modern wines,” says Rowly.
What sets Scion apart is its commitment to independence, managing everything from grape growing to customer-facing retail on-site. “We’ve built Scion from the ground up to achieve independence across all aspects of the wine business, all in the name of sustainably growing quality grapes to make great wine.”
For Rowly, sustainability isn’t just a buzzword—it’s a fundamental part of how Scion operates. The winery and vineyards hold Sustainable Winegrowing Australia certification, and since 2017, they’ve been generating over 70% of their annual energy requirements through renewable sources. Excess energy is returned to the grid, and they even provide complimentary electric vehicle charging for visitors.
“Investing in our facilities has been a commitment to renewable and sustainable thinking,” says Rowly. “Ensuring that grid failures don’t impact production or trading is crucial, but more than that, it’s about making a meaningful contribution to sustainability.”

When it came to choosing an electricity provider, Rowly wanted a company that aligned with his values. “We wanted to keep our excess energy local whilst supporting the movement of localised energy resource building,” he explains.
