Yackandandah has taken another big step towards its 100% renewable energy goal with the launch of its second community battery, Yack02.
The battery was officially switched on at a community event attended by Totally Renewable Yackandandah (TRY), Indigo Power, local council and residents.
For Indigo Power, this project is significant. Many of the people who helped establish our business began their journey with TRY, bringing their knowledge, passion, and determination into Indigo Power. Today, we continue that partnership by working alongside TRY as the installer partner for Yack02, bringing together the technology, design, and expertise needed to make this vision a reality.
Yack02 is a project that’s practical, locally led, and delivering real benefits to the community. It demonstrates how innovation and collaboration can translate into something tangible that people can rely on when it matters most.
Strategically located at the Yackandandah Sports Park, Yack02 is designed to both store clean energy and provide reliable backup power during outages.
The system includes:
- Battery System: Pixii 59kW / 200kWh Battery Energy Storage System.
- Solar Integration: A 66kW rooftop solar array installed on the sports park facilities.
- Advanced islanding capabilities: Allow the battery to disconnect from the grid and continue supplying power during outages, while still being able to recharge from solar even during extended blackouts. This function operates automatically without human intervention.
These features mean the Sports Park can stay powered during outages, while also reducing demand on the broader grid during peak times.
The partnership between TRY, Indigo Power, local businesses like KDEC Solar and Electrical, local council, and the Victorian Government through the 100 Neighbourhood Batteries Program, shows what’s possible when ambition, technical expertise, and community determination come together. The community battery will be owned by the Indigo Shire Council and operated and maintained by Indigo Power.
